In Kenya, the selection of career pathways and senior schools is guided by the Competency-Based Education (CBE formerly CBC) and is facilitated through a digital platform. Grade 9 learners will select their preferred pathway from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Social Sciences, or Arts and Sports, which will then influence their school placement.

Career Pathways and School Selection Process:
  • Digital Platform:

The Grade 10 School and Career Pathway Selection System is an online platform designed to help Grade 9 learners make informed decisions about their senior school pathways and subject combinations.

  • Pathway Choices:

Learners will choose from three main pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports.

  • School Categorization:

Senior schools will be categorized as either triple pathway (offering all three pathways) or double pathway (offering STEM and either Social Sciences or Arts and Sports).

  • Specialized Tracks:

Within each pathway, there will be specialized tracks, and learners will choose subject combinations that align with their chosen pathway and career goals.

  • Career Alignment:

The system links specific career pathways to subject clusters that learners should study in senior school.

Key Considerations for Learners:
  • Interests and Talents:

Learners should consider their interests, talents, and career aspirations when selecting a pathway.

  • Performance and Aptitude:

Their performance in Grade 9 and their aptitude for certain subjects should also be considered.

  • Extracurricular Activities:

Extracurricular activities and life goals can also play a role in the decision-making process.

  • Opportunities:

Learners should explore the opportunities available within each pathway and the careers they lead to.

In essence, the new system aims to ensure that learners’ education is aligned with their future career aspirations, allowing for specialization and focused learning within their chosen pathways.
